Accessibility Statement
Accessibility Commitment
At Truman Boot Co., we are committed to ensuring accessibility for all our customers, including those with disabilities. We strive to make our website and services inclusive, user-friendly, and compliant with applicable accessibility standards.
We treat accessibility as an ongoing engineering and content effort, not a one-time project. We test our website with automated tools, manual keyboard navigation, and screen reader spot-checks, and we make corrections as issues are identified.

Accessibility Standards
Our website is designed to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. These guidelines are recognized globally as the benchmark for web accessibility, focusing on creating content that is perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust:
- Perceivable — Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive
- Operable — User interface components and navigation must be operable
- Understandable — Information and the operation of user interface must be understandable
- Robust — Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies
Accessibility Features of This Website
Navigation & keyboard access
- Every interactive element shows a visible keyboard focus indicator — a two-tone ring that remains visible on any background color
- A working "Skip to main content" link at the top of every page
- The navigation menu, cart, search, and filter drawers hold keyboard focus while open — in both the forward and backward Tab directions — and return focus to the control that opened them when dismissed with the close button or the Escape key
- Menus and drawers that are closed, or in the middle of their opening/closing animation, are fully removed from the keyboard tab order
- Closing the search overlay returns keyboard focus to the search button rather than resetting to the top of the page
- The Sort By dropdown on collection pages updates the grid in place without reloading the page, so keyboard focus and context are preserved
- Off-screen slides in carousels are not reachable by Tab, so screen-reader users are never placed on hidden content
- Navigation icons and buttons meet the 44 × 44 pixel touch-target recommendation
Screen reader support
- Site logo, footer logo, social-media icons, share buttons, pagination controls, breadcrumbs, and image-based feature links all have descriptive accessible names
- Calls-to-action use descriptive, distinguishable link text rather than repeated generic labels, so similar links can be told apart
- Product-grid price announcements follow the same order as the visible text, so spoken and displayed prices match
- Modal dialogs (cart drawer, mobile menu, popups) use proper
role="dialog"semantics with bidirectional focus trapping and keyboard dismissal - Carousels and slideshows are named regions, so assistive-technology users are told what component they have reached instead of landing on an unlabeled control
- Links that open in a new window or tab announce "(opens in a new window)" to assistive technology
- Browser-native tooltip attributes (
title="…") are kept out of navigation, content, and product links because they cannot be dismissed or controlled by keyboard or screen-reader users
Video, animation & motion
- Product 360° views are provided exclusively as short videos with pause and replay controls — no rotating GIFs remain anywhere in the product catalog — and product videos do not loop indefinitely
- Every autoplaying slideshow and hero video includes a visible, keyboard-accessible pause control, regardless of its visual style
- Animated GIF images — such as the cinemagraphs in our Factory Friday journal series — automatically receive a visible pause/play control, on both the images themselves and their thumbnail previews
- Each pause/play control is programmatically associated with the specific video or image it controls, so assistive technology can identify the relationship
- Animations and slideshow auto-advance respect the operating system's "Reduce motion" preference; for visitors with that preference set, animated GIFs are shown as still images by default, with the control available to play them
Images & media
- Product gallery images, blog post images, theme image blocks, and editorial pages — including the Worn Boots Gallery and the Leather Notes series — carry descriptive alt text, verified by a site-wide sweep of every published page as actually rendered
- Alt text set on an image in our media library propagates automatically wherever that image is used across the site
- Embedded YouTube and Vimeo videos include descriptive iframe titles
- Background and decorative images are correctly marked as presentational
Forms
- The contact form, customer login, customer registration, address forms, newsletter signup, and product variant selectors all have explicit labels and appropriate
autocompleteattributes - Required fields are programmatically marked and visually indicated
Page structure
- Every page renders exactly one
<h1>heading; subsequent headings follow a logical hierarchy - A visually-hidden
<h1>is automatically added on pages that would otherwise lack one, ensuring screen-reader users always have a page title to land on
Color & contrast
- Text and interface colors meet or exceed WCAG AA contrast ratios, including sale prices, product tags, highlighted terms, pagination indicators, and small-text elements
- Links within blog articles — and the related-article links beneath each post — are underlined rather than distinguished by color alone
Known Limitations
We are transparent about accessibility gaps where they exist. As of the date of this statement, we are aware of the following:
Third-party scripts. Our website uses third-party services for spam protection (Shopify CAPTCHA), customer reviews (Judge.me), and analytics. Some of these third-party scripts emit accessibility-scanner warnings (for example, "session timeout" or "form auto-submit on focus") that do not reflect actual user-facing behavior — there is no genuine session timeout, and the forms do not submit on focus. We monitor these services and adopt vendors' accessibility improvements as they become available.
Third-party review widget. The review-sorting dropdown provided by our reviews vendor currently lacks a programmatic label; a fix is planned. All review content itself remains readable by assistive technology.
Content authored by editors. A small number of older blog posts and rich-text content pages may contain content (such as inline links with title= attributes added by the Shopify rich-text editor) that has not yet been individually reviewed. Our theme includes a script that removes these attributes at page load so they do not affect real users; we are also working through older content to clean the source.
User-submitted content. Customer reviews and blog comments are published in the language the customer wrote them. Because this content is user-generated — and, for reviews, rendered by a third-party widget — individual submissions in languages other than English are not marked with a language attribute, and screen readers may apply English pronunciation to them. We have asked our reviews vendor to add automatic language marking.
We recognize that accessibility is never "finished" and are committed to continuous improvement.
Testing & Verification
Our accessibility work is verified using:
- Independent third-party audits (most recently a full-site re-audit in August 2026, with an item-by-item public response)
- Automated weekly regression checks — roughly fifty individual probes across thirteen representative page types — that verify previously-fixed accessibility issues have not reappeared
- Site-wide image alt-text sweeps that check every published page as rendered, including pages built from theme sections
- Lighthouse automated audits (target accessibility score ≥ 95)
- Manual keyboard-only navigation through critical purchase flows
- Periodic screen-reader spot-checks (VoiceOver on macOS / iOS, NVDA on Windows)
- Color-contrast verification on key UI components
We recheck after each significant theme or content change.
